Two months ago on an overcast March afternoon my mom, Rebecca, and I met with our closing agent. She was a strong and knowledgeable presence on a day that can feel overwhelming and scary. If you have ever closed on a house before, perhaps you have also felt these feelings. She was a guiding force and after chatting for a few minutes we discovered she too had once been in the business of fixing up old homes. I saw some of my future self sitting across from me at that table.
We were closing on a historical home, historic for the WOMAN that owned it at one time, Dr. Ella Stokes. My mom and I had recently taken a leap of faith to pursue our dreams and start this business. Dr. Ella Stokes’ story, the story of our closing agent, and the story of many other women in this world who live the life they want to live continue to inspire me. As Mother’s Day quickly approaches I am so grateful for my own mom for being a beacon in my life. I am also grateful for the strong feminine energy I find in this home’s story, our business’ story, and the story of the people I meet. Live the life you dream of. It starts by taking that first step toward it.
Happy Mother’s Day all!

As we step into May we step through the doorway of Spring. Our Earth is bursting back to life after a long, cold winter. Suddenly, everything is fresh and green and flowering and sweet like newborn babies and kittens. The month hits the ground running with baskets for May day and then Cinco de Maio, Mother’s Day, graduations, planting gardens and flowers in tandem with Mother Earth. May ends with the last weekend officially bringing in summer…. In step with the season, I want to thank important moms and women who have touched us in this process of caring for Ella’s house. As mentioned in our previous blog, the house we are currently working on in Oskaloosa, IA is a historical home due to once being owned by Dr. Ella Stokes. She was a professor at William Penn University for four decades and she was also active within the Quaker community and Friends Church.
She was the only female faculty member to have purchased and owned her own home. She was able to afford this by selling produce from her own garden and using extra rooms in her home for boarders.
Mother’s day is another day to celebrate women and the feminine energy. The perfect opportunity to express gratitude for the presence and influence of the men and women in our lives that possess that feminine energy. Emily and I both, as managers and founders of Accord Home Solutions, are always aware that we are two women launching a company in a world where male entrepreneurs are more common.
We gravitate to, and pull toward us, the spirit of a feminine energy. The power and sustaining strength that we use to get through projects. For me, my own mother of course is with me constantly. Emily and I have talked about how we feel guided in this process. We both took a leap of faith to pursue our dream. I feel my mother cheering us on; as well as, my paternal grandmother who was a woman who marched to her own drum.
The month of May also draws my dearest friend, Mary, close to my heart. She taught me about flower gardening and instilled in me the love and passion for it. This weekend we were able to do some landscaping at the house and it felt right, the weather was beautiful.
William Penn University graduation was just 2 blocks away and the trees were showing off their fresh blossoms during the celebration..
Emily and I were able to participate with mother earths coming to life by planting flowers and getting our hands in the dirt.
We always feel the very tangible presence of Ella Stokes as well. We know her strength, courage and will to live the life she wanted no matter the stakes. We are continually inspired by her story. We are driven to preserve her history in this home while still giving the structure the updates and comforts sought after in our modern day. This home is a block and a half from the Friends church and we feel the strength of the Quaker connection that Ella had.
On my drive home today I felt full of love for the process and opportunity of being now part of the line of owners and caretakers of this home. We are in good company. I thought to myself, “I love Ella’s house.” I am so grateful for the opportunity to breathe that love and new life into it.
We are so happy to be enjoying Oskaloosa during this lovely springtime. We want to share all that the town has to offer.
